Do you know what is the sexiest and ugliest thing in the world is?

“ You really dont know that. Even if you do, you didn't realise it's power!!

White lie or misleading truth?

What is right, what is morally correct? A lie or a misleading truth? To understand this, I am taking two examples. Paula Jones brought a sexual harassment lawsuit against Bill Clinton while he was president.

Justice - What's the right thing to do

Some days ago, I started to watch an interesting Harvard lecture series on Law. In this lectures, Mr. Michael Sandel has come up with the cool philosophy which everyone of us can digest easily on many interesting issues.

Free to choose

Having physical relationship with opposite gender is so important, then why we have so much romanticized celibacy?

harvey saved me!!

Today I had my breadth subject exam – ‘Effective learning techniques of professional development'. Oh wait! Don’t horrify about the course name. It has got only long title but nothing special in it.

BEING WEAK IS NOT AN OPTION!!

In one of the first lectures of Sanskrit in 8th class, our teacher told us a story. I remembered it quite recently for no reason but that story is worth sharing with you.

In ancient times, the ritual of sacrifices was very common. We already know from many stories of Mahabharata and Ramayana that practice of Ashvamedha (horse sacrifice) was quite popular and prestigious among kings at that times.

Practice of Ashvamedha was popular but was very rare. Only powerful emperors were doing it to show their strength and to impress Gods for prosperity of the state.

Common people were also doing rituals for sufficient rainfall, for getting more produce in agriculture, for having a baby. Have you thought that which animals they were sacrificing while these rituals? Mostly goat, lambs and similar animals.

So, our teacher asked us, why do you think only lambs, ships were offered as sacrifice and not strong, powerful animals like lions, tigers and elephants.

In very next day, he taught us this subhashita (wise sayings through poetry in Sanskrit):

This sayings is much relevant in today's time. Being weak is not an option for many of us. We have to stand our ground no matter what. Our history is all about perseverance. Those species adapted according to the situation and preserved themselves are remained on the planet. Those who didn't, are vanished. Every other species is trying to snatch each others bread.

We are living in the era where we might be feeling bogged down by competition around us. But we have to keep this in mind that, we have the sole responsibility to preserve ourselves and emerge victorious. It is up to us which option we choose. Either stay on the ground for eternity after getting hit by a powerful punch or again stand up for fight. Some people will surely guide us on the way, but actual task of doing thing is solely on our shoulders.

So, adapt to change, seek competence, empower yourselves and do nothing short of the best that you can do.

Peace...

IS SUBRAMANIUM SWAMI A CANNIBAL?

I have been following many debates, discussions and writings of Dr. Subramanium Swami. And I must say, his debating skills are extraordinary. Swami might be vegetarian by diet, but when it comes to debates, he eats people alive. He tears their arguments in pieces. He can make Arnub Goswami to lower down his tone and bite his head off. He gets applaud of audience by defending most unpopular of beliefs. (Not that all people agree with him, but way he makes his argument makes you nothing but appreciate)

Few months back, I watched the movie called Thank you for smoking. In the movie, protagonist (Nick Naylor) is lobbyist for big tobacco company. He is a spokesperson and defends tobacco companies on T.V. channels and debates. He is the face of cigarettes on T.V. channels. His debating skill and convincing power to people about his thoughts (mostly unpopular) is astounding. In his own words,

"I don't have an MD or law degree, I have a bachelor's degree in kicking ass and taking names. You know that guy who can pick up any girl? I'm him, on crack."

In context of Swami, he could use this dialogue differently.

"You know that guy who can piss of any politician by making petitions? I'm him, on crack."

Whether it is A. Raja in 2G case, National Herald case or Jaylalitha in disproportionate asset case, he is the man behind it. Not only he targets people from other party, but when India-France deal was to signed to buy Rafale fighter aircraft, he told his party men that he will go to court if such deal happens.

Arnub Goswami is known for bossing his panelists, interruptions, stuffing words in mouth of panelists and many other nasty things. In one of the interviews on Sri-Lankan issue, Arnub was feeding words in Swami's mouth without reading a letter he wrote to Sri-Lankan President. Swami repeatedly asked him to read the letter instead of quoting it out of context and even when Arnub continued his own business, he called him "You're a laughing stock of this broadcasting world, with the amount of lies you tell. You are asking a question, you liar? You are such a dumbo! Mentally retarded you are".

Even going further, "You're a liar! You're an ignoramus. Don't be stupid. You're an ignorant man. Read the letter. Where is the letter? Why don't you read the letter? Why don't you use your brains? You're such a liar."

Who dares to call the editor-in-chief of top news channel a liar and dumbo who cannot hear a single word from anyone. (Remember never ever in case of Minakshi Lekhi?) But for Swami, case is different. When you have your facts ready, who cares what Arnub Goswami is?

Whether I agree with him or not? On some occasions, NO, I don't. But should that stop me from appreciating his skills and intellect? Surely not. He is mathematician, professor, politician, rebel, crusader, orator, lawyer and much more. Quick wit adds to his charisma. He is continuing the great ancient tradition of logical argumentation which India has. His quietly smiling visage graces just before tearing apart opposition argument, is the most fun part to watch. After going through his debates and speeches, many would think, isn't this TamBram (Tamilian Brahmin) a cannibal?

Let's not play this game (poem)

Government is literally playing with words!!

Recently a lot has been written about the Modi government. This Government believes in banning, it is spreading communalism, it makes more promises than delivery, and much more. Amidst all criticism and applaud for the new government, media and most people did not notice that this government is much more innovative than previous governments. What makes me think that this government is more innovative?

See the names given to government schemes, authorities and foreign plans. Names of all these are very innovatively formed.

NITI ayog: National Institution for Transforming India

This government body has replaced planning commission and it is a policy think-tank. See the abbreviation is cleverly put as NITI, which directly means policy.

MUDRA bank: Micro Units Development and Refinance Agency Bank. (Mudra = Currency)

From name itself, it is clear that it provides loans to micro-finance institutions at low rates. (It is government bank, so of course provides at lower rate)

AIM: Atal Innovation Mission

AIM will be an Innovation Promotion Platform involving academics, entrepreneurs, and researchers drawing upon national and international experiences to foster a culture of innovation, R&D in India.

AMRUT: Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Development

SETU: Self Employment and Talent Utilization Scheme

PRASAD: Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritually Augmentation Drive

HRIDAY: Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana

SATYAM: Science And Technology of Yoga And Meditation

Earlier government had JNNURM mission for urban development (Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission). You will surely have to remember this full form to get idea of what it is. But when government gives names to scheme such as AMRUT, we can clearly form an analogy to link it with urban development like safe drinking water for urban households will prove to be AMRUT for them or self-employment will be the bridge (SETU) for poor people to come out of poverty.

From PRASAD, we can confidently say that it is linked with pilgrimage.

From doing this, government is also promoting Sanskrit-Hindi words in everyday language use. Which is a good stimulus as our language is becoming more and more westernized. Many times we do not find Hindi equivalent words.

I will not say, it is promoting Sanskrit only. Safety operation in Yemen was named as ‘Operation Rahat’. (Rahat = Relief)

2 days back, Prime Minister Modi has announced $150 million BHARAT fund, aimed at creating and providing support to disruptive start-ups in impact areas.

BHARAT to stand for ‘Better Health, Agriculture, Renewables And Technologies’ Bharat Fund derives its name from the ancient and also official name of India. Many people do not know this but it is our country’s official name. Article 1(1) says, “India, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of States”.

So, all criticism is at their place, but I liked the way that government (or bureaucrats?) is playing with words cleverly to make it look more attractive and even rural people can relate to it very easily.

Racial discrimination in India? Really??

Yesterday, I read a news in Firstpost that –Union home minister Rajnath Singh was addressing to students on the eve of Teacher’s Day in Pune and a student from South Sudan complained about racial discrimination faced by him. He said, “Whenever we go out in public places, especially in some college campuses, people call us ‘Aye Kaalia or Blackie’.”

I was not shocked to know about this, but it concerned me. Thousands of students, graduates from India are going to western countries daily for education and work. Thousands of laborers are going to Gulf countries, Europe, America to earn their meal. Many of them are already victim of this racial discrimination.

Many times Indian government shame these countries for not treating Indian citizens equally. We get frustrated when we hear the news like some doctor or engineer is killed out of racial discrimination. I will tell you one incident. Four months back, one of my friend got internship in Australia and when we came to know about this, we mocked him, “don’t get killed, we don’t want to hear your news from television.”

Conversation like this happens in fun mode, still that shows the deep impression of those news in our mind. Racial discrimination in India is surely not that extreme. It is just limited up to mocking someone about their color. But why this also should happen?

This is the huge loss for India on economic basis. As tourism industry get affected by such news. Also students from foreign countries would not be enthusiastic to pursue their higher studies in India, if such news popping up very frequently. More than economic, it is also
enormous loss for India on moral grounds.

I can see, poisonous seeds of British colonial legacy germinated in here. We have to remove them completely. And this will not just happen by changing names of Bombay to Mumbai or Madras to Chennai, or changing names of Connaught and Curzon road to something else. We have to address this ‘obsession of paleness.’ (I will not use word fair here)

Again

I again want to fall in love
With myself
I want to redeem myself from
The graveyard of doubt

I again want to compose myself
As a whole person
Not just the scattered personalities
I wanted to be.

I again want that freedom of mind
Before choosing an option
I just don’t want to be that kid
Who is still in confusion
Whether to order chocolate or ice-cream

I have learned cost-benefit analysis
Way too much
Now, I am afraid whether to invest
Such big sum or not.

This atheist is now seeking the god
To come out from his situation
I wonder, isn’t his insecurity
Going to give birth to the god?

Oh mighty lord, you should worship
His doubt of failure,
Because you’re nothing more that
Its incarnation.

Religion, you don’t have power to daunt me anymore!

Don’t bother yourself with the religious theories. You already know what is right and wrong. You are the sole decider of your actions. You are the best judge about what is right thing to do. Whenever you are not finding answer to the questions you have, you don’t need to look at the books which many people would tell you that are holy. Your inner conscious is the best mentor you have. Ask him and you will get an answer.

Believe in basic principal this mother earth taught you. Be humble, be selfless and be consistent.

You don’t need to be getting told about things which you already know in a fancy way by these agents of salvation. There is already good and evil present inside your soul. It’s your call who you want to win in every decision you make.

You are too smart to do cost benefit analysis. But it’s not always about cost benefit. Sometimes you have to consider about universal good. Don’t ignore it with your personal ambition.

So religion, I don’t fear you and most importantly I don’t need you anymore. Your agents taught me the idea of sin, heaven and hell. I have got nothing but fear.

What good these holy books are, if ten people are reading them and all are getting different meanings? One becomes extremist and one becomes saint. At the end it’s only my inner conscious that is guiding me.

I pity those supremacist people, who believe that their religion is greatest of all. Every religion tells us to be humble and supremacy is the not a characteristic of humbleness. Those who are preaching the religions haven’t learned this basic thing.

If some religion is imprisoning my personal freedom, then I will abandon such religion. If some religion is discrimination on the basis of my gender and not allowing my personal growth, I condemn such religion. If I know something wrong with the religion and still I am trying to defend it to prove my religion is great, I condemn myself for doing this.

Urge to share

If there's any kind of magic in this world, it must be in attempt of understanding someone, sharing something.
-from movie "Before Sunrise"

We all have feelings and as a normal human being we all have need to share those things with someone. That someone may be your friend, sister, brother. Maybe be it’s your girlfriend or boyfriends, if you are lucky enough to get one. Even the strongest persons have this urge to share his feelings at some point of time. Many times strength is just pretence. But what about the people who don’t have any such precious relation? They are so busy around themselves or with their career that they don’t have anyone to tell what their problem is. Not only problem, it could be anything like- what I am going to do in this week or which girl I am attracted to in my class and how I am terrified to speak to her, or just a plain discussion on the recent TV series I am watching or book I am reading or what are my weird fetishes.

We normal people generally do these discussions. But what about the group of people I was discussing? This ‘Not having anyone’ syndrome has some critical symptoms like antisocial behavior, doing weird things in middle of night, loudly taking to yourself (even if people noticing you), shouting on phone for no reason, living in the room where full of shit scattered around (I don’t mean literally and even if I do, that doesn’t change anything).

I fell that we should be helping such people to get over their ‘fucked up’ situation. There may be such sociopaths around you.

Everybody act crazy or do some mad stuff sometimes. The word ‘sometimes’ is very important in the previous sentence. If this madness becomes way of life, people call it ‘psychosis’.

So the main point of writing this blog was that- Do share your feelings whenever you need. Make at least one friend with who you can chat about yourself, who is genuinely interested in you. Sometimes hollowness inside our brain gives birth to suicidal ideas. Try fill out this void inside your skull if you have any. And mainly try to be social and care about people around you.

Good luck!!

Spontaneous

On a very fine day, somebody asked him, “What do you want to be?”

He quickly said, “Spontaneous.

You must be wondering what that means.

He wants to burn asses of those who try to be smart without a reason. He wants to come up with the wittiest comebacks possible.

If somebody asks him what his views on a particular issue are, he wishes, he would be coming with a very different dimension, a very different angle which normal person wouldn’t have thought of.

He doesn’t want to be unarmed in the battle of wits. He wants his contender to surrender in front of him just by seeing his arsenal.

He wants to be Spontaneous.

Why fear debate?

It’s been a hot topic now-a-days – Freedom of speech and expression. I have already written about it one year back. But recent events have sparked my curiosity to know more about it. AIB roast videos, killing of Avijit Ray in Dhaka, Charlie Hebdo magazine case, fringe element’s glorification of Nathuram Godse, ban on India’s Daughter documentary, and frequent threats to writers who challenge the ideas of religion and many more events happened in recent past.

So what is my idea of freedom of speech and expression? Should there be any limit to it? Should government be interfering in every public matter? How ban is justified?

I think basic concept behind healthy democracy is debate. Let debate happen. People are very well educated today to decide what is right and wrong. A person (or society) who believes in banning has something to hide. That government who believes in banning has surely lost faith in peoples’ decision making capacity. (The very people who voted them to power)

It’s India, so let’s talk about the religion first. I would like to discuss about where banning is necessary and where free thinking should be allowed?

If somebody is challenging any religious idea and religious philosophy with reasoning, it should be welcomed. No religion is perfect and every religion evolved over period of time. All social reformers challenged wrong ideas of religion or thinking of society. Mahatma Phule, Raja Ram Mohan Ray, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Mahadev Ranade all these social reformers were critic of wrong things inculcated in religion and they tried to change that. Without these free thinkers, women still would not have been any place in society, education would have been neglected to them, and practise of ‘sati’ still would be there. Should we say these great people betrayed their religion?

But there is another group, who just want to mock other’s beliefs, religious ideas. Hate speeches against other religion is one of such things. Drawing obscene picture of religious deities would definitely offend people. In that case, you are not giving any message to people. This kind of mocking should be banned. Making fun of others ideas without reasoning should be banned. It is my idea and understanding and it may not be correct.

Now-a-days, there are many comments from self proclaimed religious leaders about how many children one should be producing to sustain the religion’s population or comments inciting clashes between groups of people, so what should be the extent of banning in this case? If there is no harm to people or property, there is no need of ban but if there is possibility of clashes between people then banning is justified. I feel, these debates make people aware about their leaders and if they are worthy to represent them.

What bothers me about hate speeches is not the person who is delivering such speech but the mob of people who is applauding to such outrageous comments.

Another point I would like to discuss is – Don’t try to protect your leader from debate. It is surely going to happen. Let me give you a example- right wing people are asking for thorough investigation of events happened before assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. They believe that Godse was not an assassin by choice but the forced to make decision to kill Gandhi due to circumstances created. Mahatma Gandhi was surely the greatest personality of 20th century but if he was so innocent them why fear investigation and debate? Let it happen. People will decide by themselves.

Another incident which disturbed me was - attack on a Tamil news channel Puthiyathalaimurai. The attack by some fringe elements to intimidate media which was planning to telecast a debate on need for married women to wear a ‘mangalsutra.’ This is cheap example of religious intolerance.

Instead of protesting on roads for somebody’s idea, make a counter argument by writing a blog, sharing your counter views on social media or make a video with your argument. Why there is need of violence?

We are living in India and we have glorious history of argumentation. We need to protect and continue that legacy. Without it, we are just a banana republic.

See you in next blog.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan - A Further Perspective

There has been huge buzz about the “Swattch Bharat Movement”, the campaign by our honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Advertisements on T.V., photos on social media like Facebook, twitter are roaming around. Everybody is now somehow aware about cleanliness (we are actually following it or not is real question), need of dustbins in public places, not spitting on roads and public walls, not to urinate in public places and so on. There are number of NGOs supporting this campaign. But my point is what happens to that garbage after? All kind of garbage we put in single dustbin. There is no system in India. In many countries, there are different dustbins for different kind of garbage or different schedule of garbage vans for picking rubbish from houses for different kind of garbage. Types of garbage like – burnable, non-burnable, cans and glass bottles, plastic trays and packaging, paper and cloth.

Few months back, I was in Japan. I would like to tell you about their system. There is special kind of plastic bags called ‘gomi-bukuro’ in which only, you can collect the litter and throw it in government dustbin for your specific area. And there are days defined to throw this waste material according to its kind. Benefit of this system is government does not need to sort further this waste material and process would be simpler and safe. Industrial garbage (hospitality garbage, business garbage, office garbage, factory garbage) is not permitted to be placed with domestic garbage in the same collection areas.

It is very much risky to put hospital garbage, agricultural garbage or industrial garbage with domestic one. Agricultural chemicals put in domestic garbage and given same disposal system as of domestic garbage would be very much risky. Same applies to industrial one.

I would also like to give one another example. In trains, what we normally do is buy food or cold drink or water bottles and after finishing we throw them outside. Government could not help us in everything and we should not be crying all the time that I would have put garbage in dustbins but there were no dustbins. So what can we do is, always carry a plastic bag with you while travelling so that we can put all our garbage in that plastic bag and after getting off train, we can throw it in dustbin.

So my concern is while we are educating our population the need to use dustbins, we should also encourage them to put garbage according to its type and government should be first making such system. Writing on every public places that –“do not urinate” has no use if there are no urinals available. Mainly women are victim of this system.

Good thing about most of us (Indians) is- we do not throw things unto there is sure need of throwing it. We are even careful in unpacking the gift wrap or using old knickers for cleaning purposes. This is actually good thing but now-a-days it’s changing.

This mission would be successful only when masses would be enthusiastic about waste management and would refuse live in filth.

A funny conversation between Dad and Son

A funny conversation between Dad and Son: (on phone)
(I only heard son’s side conversation. Dad side conversation I am assuming how it would be.)

Dad: Remind me, when was the last time you took your bath?

Son: It was 12-15 days back.

Dad: then Beta, go and take your bath.

Son: Papa, last time I bathed and I was just shivering. And the weather is much colder now.

Papa: Beta, then use heater. (Immersion rod)

Son: Papa, I don’t even have bucket and heater. Previously I was using shower and water was not much colder then.

Papa: then buy heater or borrow it from someone else.
Son: Okay papa, I will borrow it from someone and after taking bath I will let you know.

(I was (accidentally) hearing this conversation and was laughing in my mind.)

I've never been lonely

I love these passages written by Charles Bukowski. So sharing with you guys,

(1)
I've never been lonely. I've been in a room - I've felt suicidal. I've been depressed. I've felt awful -- awful beyond all -- but I never felt that one other person could enter that room and cure what was bothering me...or that any number of people could enter that room. In other words, loneliness is something I've never been bothered with because I've always had this terrible itch for solitude. It's being at a party, or at a stadium full of people cheering for something, that I might feel loneliness. I'll quote Ibsen, "The strongest men are the most alone." I've never thought, "Well, some beautiful blonde will come in here and give me a fuck-job, rub my balls, and I'll feel good." No, that won't help. You know the typical crowd, "Wow, it's Friday night, what are you going to do? Just sit there?" Well, yeah. Because there's nothing out there. It's stupidity. Stupid people mingling with stupid people. Let them stupidify themselves. I've never been bothered with the need to rush out into the night. I hid in bars, because I didn't want to hide in factories. That's all. Sorry for all the millions, but I've never been lonely. I like myself. I'm the best form of entertainment I have. Let's drink more wine!”

(2) 'I was a man who thrived on solitude; without it I was like another man without food or water. Each day without solitude weakened me. I took no pride in my solitude; but I was dependent on it. The darkness of the room was like sunlight to me.'

Black Swan :Movie unfold

When I first time watched this movie, i didn't understand it completely. So If you too were in the same position, this blog is for you, even if you weren't, still you will enjoy this.

Swan lake story:

Virginal girl, pure and sweet trapped in the body of a swan by a evil sorcerer. She desires freedom but that only true love can break the spell of the evil sorcerer.

Her wish is nearly granted in the form of prince. But before he declare his love to white swan, her lustful twin sister black swan tricks and seduces prince.

Devastated, the white swan leaps off the cliff, killing herself. And in death, finds freedom.

In the movie:

Nina (played by Natalie Portman) is a ballet dancer who always wants to be a swan queen (the lead role of the act). In the starting of the movie, she was seeing the poster of swan queen of her production house as obsessively as she always wanted her photo there.

But for the character of swan queen, dancer must play both the roles of gentle white swan and seductive black swan as they are twin sisters.

Nina is beautiful, fragile, and innocent. She has all the characteristic of white swan. If there had a role only for white swan then Nina was perfect casting for it. But black swan is seducing, dangerous, sexually aggressive and completely opposite of white swan.

Thomas, producer of the play, wanted these characteristics in her.

Nina has hallucination problem. She actually imagines her black swan character as seducing. At railways station, she first time sees her.

For the character of swan queen, her competition is new bold and confident dancer Lily (Mila Cunis) who could be the better choice for black swan. Thomas knows abilities of Nina but the attitude of black swan he wants in her, is not coming out of her. Still he gives her chance. He didn't want her to be fragile; he wants her seducing, aggressive. He knows role of white swan is not a problem but the real problem is how Nina would play black swan.

She always strives for the perfection. Thomas asks her to ‘lose herself’. He says, perfection is not only about control but it’s also about letting go.

From the moment she started dance, her long cherished dream was to be swan queen. She was actually dying to that role and when she gets it, she literally explodes in happiness.

Thomas don't want her to be weak. He wants her to come out of her self made restriction zone. He wants her to be expressive about her feelings.

The character of black swan has eaten up earlier swan queen Beth too as indicated by this scene.

She throws her toys as now she is not the same girls she used to be. She actually imagines her black swan character as Lily. It is interesting to see that she is fighting with herself as she is not able to distinguish between real and imagination (hallucination).

As what happens in Swan Lake story, is parallel happening in the movie. She wants Thomas to believe in her but she thinks Lily is seducing Thomas to get her role and Thomas is getting attracted towards her.

That feeling of jealousy, envy transforming her character. In due course of time, she is changing from white swan to black swan.

She is learning to oppose things. Here, first time she opposes her over protective mother to get out of her room. The character of black swan was eating her up.

She has transformed. She wants to end that black swan character developed in her. She ends that character by putting broken glass in her stomach. Stabbing in the mirror is her losing who she is and becoming swan where she fights good self against evil self.

At the end, after playing her character as black swan when she passionately kisses Thomas, first time Thomas get seduced by her act as black swan. That persona he always wanted in her.

Hope it helped you a bit.

No offence, please!!

I must say, this elections season is most exiting since last 2 elections. Use of social media increased, volunteer’s of each party coming up with different strategies to get people’s attention whether it is from Facebook, twitter or YouTube.

But what I found most interesting is increased use of this phrase- No offence, please! Supporters of different parties posting anti-news on each other’s facebook profile writing this phrase. (Namo supports posting Kejri's ‘Bahot hi Krantikari’ video on AAPtard’s profile and AAP supporters posting unfinished interview of Namo with Karan Thapar or things like that) and giving a caption to it, no offence please.

Are boss, if your clear intention is to offend someone or his beliefs then why are you trying to be sophisticated by writing this phrase, no offence.

Why we use exactly opposite phrases to the emotions? In Hindi, when you are going to tell something bad news, you first ask that person- ‘promise me ki tum bura nahi manoge.’

Tell me, how someone could tell you how he will not feel bad even before listening to the story. Ironic huh! Maybe you are trying to make his mind to hear bad thing. And if his face become fill with shadow of grief after hearing your story, then you tell him that I already ask you to not fell bad.

Do you thing when he gives permission, he actually meant it? Or he is just eager to hear your damn story.

Do you actually think to change the game by saying these silly words? If yes, then no offence but you'r a stupid asshole.;-)

A Wish a Day for a Week

This is a speech by  Indian economist and a Nobel laureate Amartya Sen. I found it interesting, hope you would enjoy too.

Friday 17th January 2014, ZEE Jaipur Literature Festival, Diggi Palace

On being invited to the Jaipur Festival, I was naturally nervous about attempting an opening address to such an elite gathering. However, about ten days ago I saw in the newspapers, indeed in all of them, that India has entered triumphantly into the “elite club” of the world. The Times of India’s headline said: GSLV-DV launch successful, India joins elite club”. As an Indian citizen, I immediately lost all fear about not being able to get into the elite club. However, I had a problem in not knowing what GSLV-DV is. Or does. On probing I found that GSLV-DV is famous because it carries a GSAT-14 communication satellite. That seemed just what I needed. And so I decided to use the GSAT-14 communication satellite to communicate well beyond my station in life.

High above the clouds I came across a figure who looked very impressive, who explained that she was the Goddess of Medium Things. “ Gosh,” I said. ‘Medium you may be, but you look very impressive.” “You should see,” she replied, “ the goddess of LargeThings.” “You could please introduce me to her,” I said, “but are you sure that you are really a goddess?” “Yes I am,” she responded firmly, “I am – as I told you – Goddess of Medium Things. But, you are right, I am very informal, and you can call me GMT – that is my pet name.” “Isn’t GMT some kind of time?” I asked her. “Yes,” she said, “ I can give you the correct time, also one of my specialties, but more importantly I can grant you a wish – in fact more that one wish- for your country.” “ How jolly,” I said, “May I have seven wishes – a wish a day for my country for a week? Please, let us get on with it!”

“Sure,” GMT said,” but why are you in such a hurry?” I explained, “ I am going to the Jaipur Literature Festival. You have heard of the famous Jaipur Literature Festival, my goddess?” “Yes,” GMT said, “but it is really so big now that it has been moved from my care to the care of the Goddess of Large Things. Still, I will try to help you. Make a medium-sized wish about literature.”

So I jumped in: “Classical education in language, literature, music and the arts are being seriously neglected in India. Very few people study Sanskrit anymore. Nor do they study ancient Persian, or Latin, or Greek, or Arabic, or Hebrew, or Old Tamil. We need serious cultivation of classical studies for a balanced education. In India’s increasingly business-oriented society, there is generally far less room today for the humanities, and that is surely a problem, is it not, goddess?” “But,” said the goddess, “ Rabindranath Tagore in your village, Santiniketan, used to grumble that science education was being neglected. So how can you say the opposite?” “That was then, madam,” I said,” and this is now. Rabindranath was right in his day, but bright students now, everywhere in India, go for science and technology, and look down on humanities.”

“So,” asked the goddess, “you wish to have a greater role of humanities in Indian education?” “ Something like that,” I said. “What a vague statement: ‘something like that!’, GMT said, ”you must have clearer ideas.” “ Clearer? Do you mean more precise, dear goddess?” I asked. “No,” said GMT, “you are making the common mistake of assuming that a clear statement needs to invoke precise magnitudes. A good statement of an inherently imprecise concern – and most important concerns in the world are imprecise – mustcapture that imprecision, and not replace it by a precise statement about something else. You should learn to speak in an articulate way about ideas that are inescapably imprecise ( as a man called Aristotle put it more that two millennia ago). And that is one of the reasons why the humanities are important. A novel can point to a truth without pretending to capture it exactly in some imagined numbers and formulae. Okay then, now go on to your second wish.”

“Well,” I said, “may I go into politics?” GMT looked unsurprised and said, “ I think I can guess what you are going to ask, knowing your left-wing views – you are on the left in India, aren’t you?” “Nothing escapes you goddess, “ I replied, “ I am. But my big political wish is to have a strong and flourishing right-wing party that is secular and not communal.” “Why?” asked a slightly puzzled goddess. “There is a an important role,” I explained, “ for a clear-headed pro-market, pro-business party that does not depend on religious politics, and does not prioritize one religious community over all others.” GMT said, “Surely there was such a party in India, led by some very smart people, wasn’t there?” I said, “Yes, madam, there was – it was called the Swatantra Party, and among its leaders was Minoo Masani, an extremely smart fellow indeed – but the party died. I wish it would be revived.” “Let me recollect,” GMT said, “this Minoo Masani – was he really in favour of non-communal politics and did he believe in the brotherhood of all people, what the French revolutionaries call ‘fraternity’? I seem to recollect that he said some unflattering things about fraternity in one of his public speeches.” “Yes, goddess,” I told GMT, “he was staunchly secular and very much in favour of fraternity. But in a light-hearted remark in 1946, Masani said that he adored fraternity but given the misuses of the word after French Revolution, he did not use it. He went on to say in the Constituent Assembly of India on December 17th 1946, “When I introduce my brother, I call him my cousin.”

“Would that be your favorite party then?” asked the goddess. “No, absolutely not,” I said. But I would very much like such a party to be there, giving Indian voters the choice of supporting a secular, pro-business point of view – it would be very good for Indian politics. The support that a right-wing pro-business point of view receives should not have to be parasitic on making an alliance with religious politics.”

“Okay,” said GMT,” but can you make your explanations short- we don’t have much time. Let me remind you that you are speaking to me and not lecturing at the Jaipur Festival. What’s your third wish?” “ I would like the parties of the left to be stronger, but also more clear-minded and much more concentrated on removing severe deprivations of the really poor and downtrodden people of India.” “ But what about the priority that is attached to their dedication to fighting against American imperialism?” GMT enquired – and then went on, “ Now that the Soviet Union is gone, the Chinese are beating the Americans in the market economy, the Latin Americans and the Vietnamese are racing ahead with their own economic and social progress, surely the Indian Left is the only remaining political group in the world on whom the mantle of fighting American imperialism has fallen. And in giving priority to their dedicated pursuit of that philosophical priority, they have made various Parliamentary moves that have reduced the number of seats they themselves have in Parliament. It is not easy for me to make them politically stronger until they themselves think afresh”.

“I hope they will,” I said. “What the left really has to concentrate on is reversing the terrible state of the really poor people of India, rather than nursing an antiquated understanding of imperialism, or joining the other political parties in agitating for cheaper amenities for parts of the middle classes.” “Another lecture!” said GMT, “But I am a patient goddess, and ready to listen to your grumble about your own friends; so go on – what’s the fourth wish?”

“I would like the media to be more responsive to the needs of the poorest people, and less single-minded in their coverage of the world of glitzy entertainment and shining business opportunities. They are right to grumble about the way subsidies waste economic resources, but largely fail to denounce subsidies for the better off, in the way subsidies for the unemployed and the hungry are savaged in the press. Reading the papers or listening to media on fiscal irresponsibility of supporting employment schemes and food subsidies, you would scarcely guess that many times as much governmental money is spent on subsidizing electricity for those who are lucky enough to have power connection (a third of the Indian people have no connections at all), subsidizing diesel, cheapening fertilizers, offering low cost cooking gas (most Indians have no instruments into which these inputs would go) than on supporting food and employment schemes for the poor. The latest figures are the following: Subsidies on food 0.85 percent of GDP; employment guarantee scheme (NREGA) cost 0.29 percent of GDP. Compared with that the power subsidies, in various forms, for those who have electric connections amount altogether to more than one full percentage of the GDP, possibly closer to 2 percent, to which should be added 0.66 percent on fertilizer subsidy and 0.97 percent on petroleum subsidy (diesel, cooking gas, etc). So the much criticized food subsidy and employment guarantee for the poor and the unemployed cost about 1.14 percent of GDP, whereas the cost of subsidizing electricity, fuel and fertilizers for the relatively better off is minimally 2.63 percent, and possibly closer to 3.63 percent of GDP – more than three times what is allocated to feed the poor and provide employment to the unemployed.”

“Yet,” I continued, “reading the papers and hearing broadcasts you would tend to think that it is subsidy for the poor – food and employment – that strains India’s public resources, even though two to three times as much governmental funds are spent in subsidizing the better off. In fact, since the Government spends only a miserable 1.2 percent of the GDP on health care (unlike in China where the percentage is nearer 3 percent) the total government expenditure on health (in all forms), food subsidies and employment subsidy is much less than what the government spends on subsidizing the consumption of power, diesel, cooking gas, fertilizers, etc, for the relatively rich – and much more vocal – people.

It is sad that the most vibrant media in the world is so silent on the needs and predicaments of the poorest. A third of Indians have no electric connections. The media made such a fuss – quite rightly in its context – about 600 million people not having power on a day in July two years ago when there was a terrible administrative bungle about power supply, but neglected to report the fact that 200 million of those 600 million people never had any power at all – a perpetual black-out – because they were not even connected to electricity.”

“Enough, enough,” said the goddess, “go on.” “My fifth wish is easy to speak about,” I said, “since it concerns persistent deprivations I have been nagging about for decades: all children must have decent schools to go to; every person must have medical care beginning with preventative care; women should not have to lead more deprived lives than men; the country should not be full of undernourished children (not to mention the most undernourished in the world); every child has to be fully immunized (rather than a third of the children being left out); everyone should have a home with a toilet (rather than half the population having to defecate in the open, even as India supposedly joins the elite club of the world); and there should be generally good higher education and a sustainable environment.” GMT said, “You ask for a list of different things as parts of one wish. However, I will not be small-minded, since I am medium-hearted.

“But all that you have asked for should be very easy to achieve if your countrymen start making intelligent use of the resources that economic growth generates. And this will work both ways: The advancement of human abilities resulting from these supportive changes will, in turn, help to sustain high economic growth in long run, because nothing, ultimately, is more important for economic growth than having a healthy and educated labor force (ask the Chinese, Japanese, Koreans and other Asians and they will tell you). That is the biggest lesson of East Asian development that India has missed. “

“Since we agree on that, may I put in a wish, dear goddess,” I said,” which concerns a peculiar judicial decision in India, which has recently recriminalized homosexual personal behavior. The British rulers had made that a criminal offence in 1861, and made many people vulnerable to black-mail by the police and to penalization. That Article 377 of the Penal Code was overturned by the Delhi High Court as being contrary to personal rights guaranteed by the Indian constitution, but then the Indian Supreme Court – represented by exactly two judges – has reversed the reversal, and made a strictly private behavior, once again, a social crime. Can you reverse the reversal pf the reversal, dear Goddess?” “Let me see,” said the Goddess, “How I can persuade the Indian Supreme Court to think again – may be they will listen more to the voices of the Indian people than to the plea of a goddess above the clouds.”

“Let’s go on, “continued GMT. “Do you really want another wish?” “May I? I wish we in India will recognize our strength because of the nature of the country as well as the opportunities given by India’s democracy, which has been skillfully used recently by Aam Admi Party (even though they have a lot to learn about on what their programs should really be). We have a lot of corruption, but it has become a major electoral issue, which, in a democracy, is the best way for a long run solution, which will require many administrative reforms. But there are many achievements already, and it is not the case that nothing happens here other than what the business community does, and the state, in particular, cannot achieve anything (as many people go on repeating) . India was the country of families until the empire ended, and we haven’t had a real famine since independence, thanks to public action, India was expected a few years ago to have the largest concentration of the AIDS epidemic, but the public attention and social engagement has removed that threat. Since polio eradication became a politically sensitive issue, things have happened and India is now polio-free. We had a super-cyclone in the fall coming from the Bay of Bengal, many times the size of Katrina in the USA, but the government moved a million people off the coast in a good time, and predicted disaster did not happen. Even though India’s record of social achievements is low, wherever they have tried hard to make a change – like in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh – education and health care have surged ahead and so have economic growth, so that these erstwhile poor states are now among India’s richest. We can do things if we put our mind to it.

“Take gender inequality”, I went on. “There is a lot of attention that is right now being given to the incidence of rape in India, which is an improvement. But some recognitions are missing still. The reported rate of rapes in India is low (it is 1.8 per hundred thousand in India compared with 27 per hundred thousand in the USA and 29 in UK). There is surely a huge underestimation here, particularly when the victims come from the poorer and less privileged classes. But even after raising the Indian number ten-fold, the rate of rape in India would still be lower than UK, USA and most countries in the world. The main problem is not the high incidence of rape in India, but the difficulty in getting the police to cooperate and help victims, and for the society to take greater interest in sexual assaults on vulnerable women, particularly from the poorer and less privileged classes and castes. Some steps are being taken right now to change this, including stopping sexual trafficking of girls from very poor families. But much more needs to be done, and indeed can be done if we try.”

“People are very worried – and rightly – that selective abortion of female fetuses is so common and makes the female-male ratio at birth much lower in India as a whole than in the range for European countries. But nearly half the Indian states – in fact all the states in south and the east in India (from Kerala and Tamil Nadu all the way to West Bengal and Assam) – have female-male ratios at birth that are well within European range, and it is the fact that all the states in North and West have much lower female-male ratios than in Europe that makes the Indian average come out to be so low. So there is much learn from within India itself. Can you help in this, GMT, in making Indians less defeatist?” I asked.

“I can’t do that”, said the goddess, “it has to be the Indians who change their defeatist mind-set.” “That’s a letdown,” I said with frustration. “Not at all,” remarked the goddess. “I am telling you that you can solve these problems yourself – you don’t need anybody’s help. You have to know what the problems are, and how they can be solved.” “But, “I complained, “ even if it becomes clear what our problems are and how they can be solved, how can we share this knowledge, and make all Indians take an interest in our real problems?” “Well,” said GMT, “the social media can help, and – very importantly – you must read more books.”

“And,” GMT added, “the time has come for you to go to the Jaipur Festival – good reading! “ As the good goddess suddenly vanished beyond the clouds, I returned to my little GSAT-14, launched by the world famous GSLV-DV, to come straight to the festival. And I am grateful that you are all here. Thank You!”

This video could make some people tear up from the happy feelings!!

After seeing this video on YouTube, I could not resist myself from posting it here. It is a Thai commercial of an unsung hero.  I don't now what I should  write about this video. Really, I don't have any words. If you find some words to describe this ,share it on Facebook, Twitter or message it to your friend. (See the social plugins to the left side of the blog)

We talk big things, write big things, debate big things, criticize government policies to remove poverty, but hardly do anything in that direction. This guy took an initiative to change the world around him. We are smart people, we know mathematics, we know how to increase profit and minimize loss. but problem is, we, the practical men , 'only' know these things. He knows something beyond these things which is more sacred, more moral, more noble.

Do you know what is the sexiest and ugliest thing in the world is?

It is the seductive and destructive power of neatly placed words. It has heavenly and dreadful powers of being sexy and ugly at the same time.

It can change minds, souls, and people. It can spread love, blossom the atmosphere of warmth, and cherish the likelihood. It can create war, hate among communities, envy and wrath among people.

Look what Mark Antony is saying. Look at the eyes of the crowd. How color of their eyes changing from white to red while listening to his speech.

Look carefully, what Alexander is addressing to his disheartened army. The army who was just talking about rebellion against him is now calm. They were angry, even now they are angry, but reason has been changing. Now they are ready to fight immortal.

Look at the Hitler; he is giving a speech in Germany. I am telling you, I didn't understand a single word from his speech. But that enthusiasm  made a goose bumps on my hands. Someone just told me that he talked something about winning the world. I know this is disastrous but I still want to believe in what he just said.

I am listening to the speech of Winston Churchill on radio. All my Englishman wants to end this war and surrender. But see, what magic is happening. They now want to fight till the last man lives on the land Of England.

Look, Abraham Lincoln is announcing the emancipation Proclamation. I can see the confidence and freedom in the eyes of my slave negro brothers.

Look, what Barack Obama is saying in presidential campaign. I can clearly see hope in eyes of people.

Look at the Charlie Chaplin, he is not even speaking, he is showing some expressions. But I don’t know why I am getting attracted towards him? I am the slave of the words, but he is not even speaking. Why I am feeling that the world’s most beautiful words coming out from his expressions.

I am going to catch these words. Will you come with me? I will put them in world’s safe locker and hide them in the deep ocean of books to hand over to future generations.

I am a true believer of God, but what just Mark Twain said, changing my beliefs. Am I atheist now? I don’t know. I really don’t know.

I like to hear war history, stories of the great warriors, their Hugh empires, their beautiful queens, astonishing palaces and uncountable wealth. But oh God! Suddenly I lost my all feelings about these materialistic things. Is this a impact of Gautam Buddha’s book I read yesterday night?  Maybe.  Maybe not.

Please someone come and release me and my brothers from prison of the words. The more I want to come out of it, the more and more it is seducing me to stay. I am the victim of this seduction. I am telling you stay away from it. It will swallow you too.

After all the experiments on my life now I am learning what is sexy and what is ugly. I am realizing the seductive power of neatly placed words and destructive power of neatly placed foul words.

At the end of the day, oh lord, I am asking for only one thing. Give me power to differentiate, virtuous and evil, good and bad, heaven and hell, true and false.
Amen!!

AAP launches new software to find corrupt people: Political sixth sense

To get the new bust to the election campaign, Aam Aadmi Party has come up with mind-blowing software named as political sixth sense. This software is inspired from Pranav Mistery’s (MIT Scholar) sixth sense, but AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal told that it was his idea to make such software and filled a RTI against Pranav.
Kejri asking back his software from Pranav Mistry
This software can identify corrupt people. Not only this, it can also give criminal records, cases filed against that person, even over speeding charges. So everyone now fears to face Arvind Kejriwal. Our topmost sources said that, even Kejriwal is afraid to stand in front of mirror wearing this software.
Features of this software include:
1) You can dial emergency helpline number (which is not working from last 3 years) by keypad on your palm.

2) You can do sting operation by secret video recording.
3) It contains lie detector. It goes red every time Kejriwal coughs. Also you can have experience ofSach ka Saamna with Kejri. (Rajeev Khandelwal must be very unhappy, because that show was only way of income. He is planning to complain against Kejriwal to Lokpal )
Khaap phanchayat supported that Software but don’t want kejriwal to use against them. Aghories didn’t have any idea what is going on, but they supported him as they don’t have anything to hide.:P
‘This software is not secular as it is showing most of the corrupt people from minority community’, Diggi Raja said to our senior correspondent in grief.
Rahul baba is happy with this software as he can watch Chota Bhim live show in-between any rally but giving serious look at public event he told that, ‘this software is of no use as it is not able to estimate Jupiter’s escape velocity.”
“Rahul baba can wake-up at night in morning, he has anti ageing formula, and he can empower any women that come in his way. Kejriwal is jealous of Rahul baba’s super natural powers. So he comes up with this bullshit software. This is big conspiracy theory”, Rajeev Shukla added in anguish.
This comment war reached to its peak when Dr. Subramaniam Swami tweeted on micro blogging site that, ‘this software should only used against Muslims.’ Rajnath Singh kept mum after Swami’s comment as he is contesting from Lukhnow.

This software can also able to detect the 'maa-behen' galiyan, so Raghu is in confusion whether to support this or not. According to him this function is completely against the Aam Aadmi behavior.  He is finding future of Rodies is in danger if he supports this.

From some days, no media noticed Sharad Pawar. Fearing this software, he might be in underground floor of Swiss bank.
